Long-term neurocognitive outcomes of children prenatally exposed to low-dose methylmercury.

چکیده
1. It has been suggested that lowdose prenatal mercury exposure as measured by umbilical cord blood mercury concentrations of >29 nmol/L causes adverse long-term neurocognitive outcomes. 2. Of 608 children, 491 (81%) had umbilical cord blood mercury concentrations of >29 nmol/L. However, umbilical cord blood mercury concentrations were associated with only two out of 23 neurocognitive subtests. 3. There is no strong evidence to support restriction in fish consumption in pregnant women to reduce prenatal mercury exposure.

Estimation of the benchmark dose by structural equation models.
While epidemiological data typically contain a multivariate response and often also multiple exposure parameters, current methods for safe dose calculations, including the widely used benchmark approach, rely on standard regression techniques. In practice, dose-response modeling and calculation of the exposure limit are often based on the seemingly most sensitive outcome. However, this procedur...
متن کاملEffect of Methylmercury on Depression like Behavior in Rats: a Study Mitigated by Exogenous Vitamins
Depression is a heterogenous, multifaceted disorder with symptoms manifested at the psychological, behavioral and physiological level. Therefore, present study was designed as a model to analyze the long lasting effects of methylmercury chloride in male rats with a focus on depression like behavior. Male albino rats of Wistar strain were exposed orally to a dose of 2 mg/kg of methylmercury chlo...
متن کاملAerobic Fitness and Neurocognitive Function Scores in Young Faroese Adults and Potential Modification by Prenatal Methylmercury Exposure
BACKGROUND Exposure to methylmercury was shown to decrease neural stem cell populations, whereas aerobic fitness has beneficial effects on the adult brain that relies on improved neurogenesis in the hippocampus. OBJECTIVES We examined the association between aerobic fitness and neurocognitive outcomes at young adult age, along with the potential moderating effect of prenatal exposure to methy...
متن کاملNeurobehavioral deficits associated with PCB in 7-year-old children prenatally exposed to seafood neurotoxicants.
Prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was examined by analysis of cord tissue from 435 children from a Faroese birth cohort. Analysis of 50 paired cord blood samples showed excellent correlation with the cord tissue concentration (r=.90). Among 17 neuropsychological outcomes determined at age 7 years, the cord PCB concentration was associated with deficits on the Boston Naming T...
متن کاملResponse Inhibition During Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates (DRL) Schedules May Be Sensitive to Low-Level Polychlorinated Biphenyl, Methylmercury, and Lead Exposure in Children
BACKGROUND Animal studies have shown that exposure to common, low-level environmental contaminants [e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), lead] causes excessive and inappropriate responding on intermittent reinforcement schedules. The Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates task (DRL) has been shown to be especially sensitive to low-level PCB exposure in monkeys. OBJECTIVES We investigated ...
